HOUSEHOLD STRATEGIES
FOR CLIMATE CHANGE
Motor vehicles are a major cause of climate change
due to greenhouse gas emissions. These are likely to increase due
to the rapidly expanding middle classes in countries like China
and India who are copying Western lifestyles as they become more
affluent. Cutting down greenhouse gas emissions through buying a
solar powered hot water system can cost money, reducing motor vehicle
use saves money in every way.
solar powered hot water systems and water use
In suitable climates, a solar hot water system
is usually the one thing that will most reduce energy use in the
home. Although the initial outlay is expensive, the systems usually
pay for themselves within a few years. In areas with a hot summer,
electrical hot water systems can be turned off during summer.
Reducing hot water use also helps: consider low-flow
shower roses and faucets throughout the house. Using less water
helps to reduce global warming as there is considerable energy used
to distribute clean water to homes. Fix all water leaks around the
house and think about installing a dual-flush toilet if you don't
have one.
There is an increasing use of water tanks to capture rainwater from
the roof. This water can be used for washing machines, toilet flushing
and irrigation in the garden. 'Gray' water from washing machines
can also be used in gardens as most plant species tolerate, if not
thrive, on the phosphorous in laundry detergents.
better lighting to reduce global warming
Lighting is another major use of electricity,
and hence fossil fuels. Fluorescent lighting is much more efficient
than incandescent bulbs. The few extra dollars to buy energy-efficient
bulbs will be quickly paid for by the savings on your electricity
bill.
better cooling and heating around your home
Heating and cooling require a lot of power that
usually involves burning fossil fuels. There are ways to cut down
on their use. Make sure your home is well insulated and seal all
gaps and windows properly. Delay your use of heating in winter by
wearing warmer clothing. Delay your use of air conditioning in summer
by open ventilation and the use of fans.
Insulation helps to prevent use of cooling and
heating systems. Window tinting can be an inexpensive way to minimize
heat passing through your windows, while suitable insulation in
ceilings makes dramatic savings in power bills.
energy efficient products around your home
Before purchasing new products, it is worth considering
if it is really needed. If so, would a secondhand model suffice?
A brand new fridge or washing machine involves a lot of greenhouse
emissions in its manufacture and transport to your door.
If you do buy a new product, it will may have
an energy efficiency rating such as the ENERGY STAR system to see
which products have the best energy efficiency. Remember too, that
better quality products may last longer and thus longer avoid the
greenhouse gas emissions from another product being manufactured.
green electricity for your home
In many countries, electricity providers are offering
consumers the purchase of environmentally friendly electricity.
For a surcharge on your power bill, you can contribute to the use
of renewable energy from solar power, wind farms or possibly hydroelectricity.
recycling around your home
An increasing number of countries offer recycling
in many regions for cardboard, paper and plastics. A surprising
number of items can be recycled, although items of made of steel
will usually need to be taken to a special collection center.
energy efficient gardening
Compost lawn clippings and food leftovers where
possible. Plant more mature trees which act as a storage for carbon.
Careful placement of trees can also shelter your house from the
sun in summer but allow warming during winter.
Increased garden area and less lawn means less
mowing which uses fossil fuels. Consider the use of a push mower
which will provide more exercise as well.
